In recent years, the problem of plastic waste has become increasingly prominent. Calls are increasing for plastic reduction at home and abroad. And the waste classification is gradually implemented. The pace of sustainable development has become faster and faster.
To achieve their goals, companies must implement them on the brand and product side as soon as possible. Packaging innovation is the most relevant focus. More and more consumers and manufacturers are turning to more environmentally friendly products.

Beverage Innovation for Sustainable Development

01.

Paper bottle

Carlsberg
In 2019, at the C40 Global Mayors Summit, Carlsberg announced two latest research prototypes of “green fiber bottles.” So far, the world’s first “paper bottle” for beer has been made public. According to Carlsberg, the green fiber bottle they developed was the first “paper bottle” for beer.

This beer bottle is made of 100% bio-based, fully recyclable wood fiber from sustainable sources. The compartment design inside the bottle meets the requirements for beer. It is understood that one of the two prototypes uses a recycled PET polymer film barrier, and the other uses a 100% bio-based PEF polymer film barrier.

Diageo
Diageo is the world’s largest manufacturer of spirits. In July 2020, , they announced that it would launch 100% carton bottled whiskey in early 2021. This paper packaging was developed by Pulpex Ltd. A sustainable packaging company jointly established by Diageo and Pilot Lite. And they has received orders from Unilever and Pepsi.

Coca Cola

Later in 2021, Coca-Cola will produce only 2,000 AdeZ plant drinks in prototype paper bottles. Coca-Cola emphasized that this paper bottle is still under development. They still evaluate the prototype bottle’s durability and content protection capabilities.

This plastic alternative is characterized by a “bio-based material”. Which is as an external carton-like barrier made of wood from sustainable sources. The bottle has a recyclable plastic lining for beverages and a plastic lid.

According to Coca-Cola, the outer paper wall is designed to resist oxygen, carbon dioxide, and liquids. Which can be used with other consumer products such as cosmetics. From an environmental point of view, the biggest attraction is environmental protection. Compared with plastic, glass, and cans, paper is more easily biodegradable and relatively easy to recycle.

02.

Low carbon bottle

In February 2021, beer brewing company Carlsberg Marston collaborated with glass manufacturer Encirc. They launch low-carbon glass beer bottles. Reducing the carbon emissions of beer bottles by up to 90%.

This trial is an innovative move to reduce the carbon footprint of packaging. It hopes to increase the recycling rate. And reduce carbon emissions while ensuring the quality of beer bottles.

It is reported that this low-carbon beer bottle product has already issued 1 million bottles in the UK. In the future, Carlsberg will continue to work hard on the road to “realizing zero emissions.”

03.

rPET bottle

Coca Cola
In February 2021, Coca-Cola stated it would start launching 100% recyclable plastic bottles. Covering convenience stores in the Northeast, Florida, and California this month.

The new packaging size is 13.2 ounces (approximately 375 ml). The new design will be used for brands such as regular Coke and Diet Coke. It is made of 100% recycled PET (rPET), which is part of a series of new measures to reduce virgin plastic.

Coca-Cola said that bottle caps and labels would not be made of recycled materials. The label of the recycled bottle will also have the “Recycle Me Again” logo.

Dasani

In the field of bottled water, Dasani plans to launch 20-ounce 100% rPET bottled water in New York, California, and Texas. Starting in March 2021. In April, 30% of rPET 20-ounce Dasani bottles will be sold nationwide.

Sidel ultralight PET bottle

Sidel launched an ultra-light 500ml PET packaging industrial bottle design. Claiming to be a cost-effective and sustainable choice. Which can be used for non-pressurized bottled water products.

Nestle
In July 2019, Nestlé’s mineral water brand Valvert launched a packaging bottle. Which made of 100% renewable PET material. This is the first time Nestlé has launched packaging of this material in the European market.

04.

Landfill biodegradable bottles

Chlorophyll Water is an American brand of chlorophyll water. They announced the use of 20-ounce bottles that can be biodegraded in landfills. To help eliminate pollution, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and recycle clean, renewable energy. image

05.

Summing up

Environmental protection publicity is becoming more and more popular. Incentives and subsidies are gradually being implemented. As industry standards stricter, beverage companies are paying more attention to sustainable development. They have also achieved certain results in product packaging and other aspects.
