In 2019, at the C40 Global Mayors Summit, Carlsberg announced two latest research prototypes of “green fiber bottles.” So far, the world’s first “paper bottle” for beer has been made public. According to Carlsberg, the green fiber bottle they developed was the first “paper bottle” for beer.
This beer bottle is made of 100% bio-based, fully recyclable wood fiber from sustainable sources. The compartment design inside the bottle meets the requirements for beer. It is understood that one of the two prototypes uses a recycled PET polymer film barrier, and the other uses a 100% bio-based PEF polymer film barrier.
Diageo is the world’s largest manufacturer of spirits. In July 2020, , they announced that it would launch 100% carton bottled whiskey in early 2021. This paper packaging was developed by Pulpex Ltd. Later in 2021, Coca-Cola will produce only 2,000 AdeZ plant drinks in prototype paper bottles. Coca-Cola emphasized that this paper bottle is still under development. They still evaluate the prototype bottle’s durability and content protection capabilities.
This plastic alternative is characterized by a “bio-based material”. Which is as an external carton-like barrier made of wood from sustainable sources. The bottle has a recyclable plastic lining for beverages and a plastic lid.
According to Coca-Cola, the outer paper wall is designed to resist oxygen, carbon dioxide, and liquids. Which can be used with other consumer products such as cosmetics. From an environmental point of view, the biggest attraction is environmental protection. Compared with plastic, glass, and cans, paper is more easily biodegradable and relatively easy to recycle.
Low carbon bottle
In February 2021, beer brewing company Carlsberg Marston collaborated with glass manufacturer Encirc. They launch low-carbon glass beer bottles. Reducing the carbon emissions of beer bottles by up to 90%.

The new packaging size is 13.2 ounces (approximately 375 ml). The new design will be used for brands such as regular Coke and Diet Coke. It is made of 100% recycled PET (rPET), which is part of a series of new measures to reduce virgin plastic.
Coca-Cola said that bottle caps and labels would not be made of recycled materials. The label of the recycled bottle will also have the “Recycle Me Again” logo.
In the field of bottled water, Dasani plans to launch 20-ounce 100% rPET bottled water in New York, California, and Texas. Starting in March 2021. In April, 30% of rPET 20-ounce Dasani bottles will be sold nationwide.
