About Flexible Packaging

What Is Flexible Packaging?

Flexible packaging is a form of packaging that uses non-rigid materials to more cost-effectively and adaptably contain items. It’s a relatively new way to package that has grown in popularity because of its high efficiency and low price. Pliable product containers are created by wrapping several different flexible materials around a product, such as foil, plastic, and paper. It can be flexible, lightweight and easy to seal while still protecting from external forces that products need.

Benefits of Flexible Packaging

Flexible packaging, often known as “bendy box,” is a form of packaging material that may be flexible, semi-rigid, or rigid. The advantages of flexible packaging are numerous; the most significant ones are:

Improved Production Efficiency

Flexible packaging uses less material than traditional rigid packing. Flexible materials’ ease of formability lowers manufacturing time while also reducing energy consumption.

Environmentally friendly

Flexible packaging saves energy, minimizes carbon dioxide emissions, and lowers transportation costs. It helps you save the environment since flexible packages take up less space and incur lower transportation expenses.

Innovative Package Design and Customization

The use of more flexible packaging materials allows for more varied and visible package forms. Thanks to our top-of-the-line printing and design services, this ensures eye-catching and distinctive packaging for enhanced marketing value.

Enhanced Product Life

Flexible packaging surrounds items to protect them from moisture, UV rays, mould, dust, and other environmental factors that might deteriorate or destroy the product.

User-Friendly Packaging

Flexible packaging is less hefty and bulky than traditional packing, allowing consumers to easily buy, transport, and store items.

Simplified Shipping and Handling

Because this technique is lighter and takes up less room than rigid packaging, shipping and handling expenses are significantly reduced.

Bags, pouches, and another flexible packaging may be reused many times.

Flexible packaging is simple to use and allows for quick product identification and access;

Because of its small size, flexible packaging allows you to store food in smaller spaces like the fridge or cupboard.

Flexible packaging comes in different shapes, sizes and colours; it allows for more imaginative designs which stand out on the shelf with your goods.

Different Types of Flexible Packaging

Flexible packaging comes in a range of shapes and sizes. Materials, conditions, and sizes and are most often produced in either formed or unformed forms. Created goods are pre-shaped and may be filled and sealed by you in-house, whereas green goods generally arrive on a roll sent to co-packers for shaping and filling.

Most flexible packages consist of plastic bags, with the exception being paper bags. These can be used for anything from flour to nuts and bolts. There are many flexible bags, including bread-style bags, stand-up pouches, spouted pouches that have an easy pour or flexible spout, and more.

Flexible packaging is usually used for food products that are better carried in flexible packagings like carton pouches which can be filled by you or your co-packer; these allow the flexible package to stand up on its own making it easier to display product information.

Pouches and flexible pouches are also commonly used flexible packaging materials. They may be produced in different sizes, shapes, colours or configurations to suit your needs. Customizable features include spouts for easy dispensing of contents; tear notches that aid opening; zipper seals that help prevent spills during shipping; flexible caps made of flexible materials that snap onto the top of flexible pouches; and more.

Trays are flexible packaging often used in industrial settings. Still, you can also use trays for serving food products with a tray meal kit or even as an advertising tool by printing your own custom design on them. Like other flexible packages, they may be produced in a variety of flexible materials and sizes.

Wraps are flexible packaging similar to pouches, but they generally have no spout or opening mechanism for dispensing contents. They may be used as flexible packaging around your products, from sandwiches to candy bars. Wraps can also serve as an attractive display item with custom packaging.

Materials for flexible packaging

Flexible packaging is a flexible package that can wrap or contain any type of product. It may be used to store food, pharmaceuticals and other products.

For flexible packaging, the elastic material packaging includes HDPE, LDPE and LLDPE. They all have excellent air-tightness & moisture resistance properties and high strength even under low temperatures compared to other flexible plastic materials such as PVC etc. Flexible packaging is a perfect option for flexible packaging.

In addition to that, all flexible materials have good transparency and glossiness too as well as high printing quality, which makes them suitable for flexible packaging of food products such as bread, cakes etc., flexible plastic material also provides flexibility in the packing process due to high flexibility and elasticity which is required in flexible packaging of products.

The technology of flexible packaging from KHS

Packaging “Versatility” | Flexible Can Packaging System Empowers Manufacturers with New Packaging Options

With the Innopack Kisters Wrap-around ShrinkPaperPacker Advanced (Innopack Kisters WSPP A) designed by KHS, you can use any packaging imaginable, such as wrap-around cartons, trays, liners, paper, film, etc. This new packaging system offers a high degree of flexibility to meet almost all secondary packaging requirements required by customers and the market. In addition, the existing Premium Series Innopack Kisters machines can be upgraded to Innopack Kisters WSPP A.

At the beginning of 2020, KHS Kisters first introduced equipment for packaging metal cans for beverages using paper. But in fact, 20 years ago, KHS Kisters has experimented with paper packaging. This secondary packaging design form is retro and may become a trend in the future.

Despite this, many potential customers do not intend to make the complete transition. Most of these customers see paper packaging as an additional new option that can be used to package a wide variety of products.

In response to the market demand, KHS Köes quickly developed the existing equipment twice, thus thoroughly ensuring the beverage industry’s flexibility in secondary packaging. A new packaging system was created by adding new functions: Innopack Kisters Wrap-aroundShrinkPaperPacker Advanced (abbreviated as Innopack Kisters WSPP A). Thanks to multiple processing modules, this line-compatible machine can handle three different types of secondary packaging.

  • Wrapped cartons with cardboard closure
  • Trays with or without paper or shrink-wrap
  • Cardboard pads wrapped with paper or shrink-wrap

This machine can wrap cylindrical containers, especially cans for beverages, with the newest soda filling machine. Its compact shape and homogeneous surface make it ideal for use with paper packaging.

Modular design: easy to retrofit, reduces energy consumption and emissions.

All Innopack Kisters Advanced packaging systems have a modular design, which makes them even more versatile. This design also allows the Innopack Kisters WSP (complete film wrap system) or Innopack Kisters WPP (full wrap system) to be retrofitted to Innopack Kisters WSPP A. This ensures production flexibility and thus can be tailored to customer or market requirements.

From a technological standpoint, the previous film packaging module had to be adapted to use the new paper packaging function. A recent paper folding and gluing module had to be designed. Therefore, the unit previously used to unfold and cut shrink film needed to be retrofitted with a paper and film attachment unit. At the same time, this section of the machine is also the location where the hot melt glue is applied from below and the tensioning of the paper. This function is suspended when handling shrink wrap.

In the new folding module, the folding tool precisely folds the paper and holds it upright around each side of the package. A separate KHS InnoHotMelt applicator with a needle valve ensures flawless gluing. As an option, an automatic glue feeding system is also available for uninterrupted production. In the set-up unit of the module, the glued flanks are first pressed onto the package and then fixed by the foam-coated tape.

The shrink channel can be configured individually and with low energy consumption. The shrink channel can be equipped with a gas heating system, which reduces energy costs by 50% and CO2 emissions by 60%. Suppose paper packaging is used instead of film packaging. In that case, the machine uses the closed shrink tunnel to transfer the processed packaging. Suppose paper packaging is used entirely instead of film packaging. In that case, the shrink tunnel can be wholly removed, thus effectively reducing the design size of the packaging machine.

Simple operation and high energy efficiency

The annual savings in electricity costs show that paper packaging is very energy efficient compared to film packaging. Based on two shifts, 300 days a year, the shrink tunnel consumes 72 kWh of electricity, resulting in an annual saving of 30,000 euros. Retrofitting the Innopack Kisters WSP is not complicated; simply replacing the existing packaging module with a deeply developed packaging module with new functions and installing a paper folding and gluing module.

What Industries Benefit From Flexible Packaging?

Flexible packaging is primarily used in the food and beverage industry but can also be found throughout other sectors. Manufacturers of plastic bottles, flexible pouches, fruit containers, etc., all benefit from using flexible packaging materials for their products to protect them during distribution without worrying about breakage or leakage. Flexible packaging is an essential tool for any business that deals with food and beverages with a water company business plan.

Flexible packaging is flexible. Re-sealable pouches are the ideal solution to package almost anything conveniently without using plastic or glass containers. The adjustable pouch can be printed on for branding purposes while still allowing customers to get every last drop of product out of it before throwing it away. The flexible packaging is quite similar to the idea of a juice box or milk carton. Instead, it can be used for just about anything.
